Zigong redemption

The story tells that in the spring and Autumn period, Lu state stipulates that all the people of Lu can redeem their nationals in slavery in other countries, and the cost is compensated by the state.

Zigong redeemed a slave, but it "developed style" and refused compensation.

The world praises Zigong noble, but Confucius rebuked Zigong to stop people from continuing to redeem slaves.

Zi Lu was told by the cow that Zi Lu saved a drowning man. He was rewarded with a cow. He took it away. Confucius praised his disciples for doing so.


Analysis: from the two positive and negative stories, Confucius's evaluation of a moral behavior is not focused on whether there is pure morality behind good people's good deeds, but whether they can form good behavior.

Moral incentive

If we emphasize the lofty nature of morality and neglect the social rewards of good people and good deeds, moral behavior will be unsustainable.

Moral standards that do not require any rewards are noble, but not everyone can, nor is it feasible for a long time.

Ideological and political work

One of the most important principles is to combine material interests with mental rewards, material rewards and even spiritual rewards to offset and scour material rewards, artificially create the dislocation and divergence of material and spirit. As a result, people will lose their motivation to pursue spiritual excellence and choke off progress. Even good moral behavior will not be patronized.
