British Clothing Sales Shrink Sharply

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) announced in September 27th that the UK retail sales index fell to -15 in September, the lowest level since May 2010, as consumer spending on clothing and household items decreased.


The retail sales index in September was in line with economists' expectations.

The UK retail sales index for August was -14.


In addition, the UK September order index rose from -22 in August to -16, reflecting demand.

The stock index declined from 22 in August to 16, and the retail sales expectation index dropped from -28 in August to -30.


CBI said clothing sales fell in September, the most recent since July 2009, and household appliances sales also shrank sharply.

Growth, high prices and rising unemployment have continued to frustrate consumer confidence, and household spending has tightened after the rise in utility costs. Retailers are expected to face more challenges in October.
