The government of Ecuador has introduced measures to impose an import duty of 10 dollars on each pair of imported shoes.

Lilia Villavicencio, chairman of Ecuador Footwear Association, told local media: "shoemaking industry will benefit from it. It will not be long before our shoe enterprises will be fully loaded, and their operating rate is only 50%."

Eduardo Lanas, chairman of the national tannery Association, said that the government's initiatives had injected new vitality into the leather industry of the country, but he also warned that the government should strictly manage the border and customs in the subsequent work to organize the illegal smuggling of such products.
